There are a lot of dangerous misconceptions about drag culture, so I’m here to clear the air and set the record straight. I was born male but I identify as a woman. When I put on my lipstick and my wig and my nine-inch heels, I am a drag queen. But you don’t have to be born male to be a drag queen- you could be born female and identify as male- then don your stage clothes and be a drag queen, too. Your biology actually makes it even easier. A non-binary individual can wear the same outfit and still be in drag, because they don’t identify either way but are presenting as a queen. Similarly, a born male can dress in a suit and tie and still be a drag king if he identifies other than male. Or, even, dress in fabulous gender-neutral stage garb and be a drag thing, still in drag, because the clothing doesn’t reflect them’s born identity. An NB person can also dress gender-neutral and still be in drag, depending on if the drag is femme- or butch-presenting in comparison to their femme- or butch-presenting street-clothes persona.A born male in a dress might not be in drag, that person might simply be trans. The difference is that drag is all about a great show of fabulousness, and trans is how that person identifies. If the dress is gorgeous and extravagant, it’s still not wise to assume that the individual is in drag, maybe she just feels fancy today. It’s the same thing as assuming that a plus-sized woman (or man) is pregnant. The same goes for a born female dressed in male-presenting clothes, or an enbie dressed in gender ambiguous clothing. Don’t make any assumptions. Mind your manners. One thing a lot of people get wrong is that furries ARE NOT in drag. Just like how a trans man wears basketball shorts in his off time, the fursuit is a representation of that person’s identity. Now, if a male wolf trapped in a human body identifies as an nongendered wolf trapped in a female wolf’s body, that’s a whole different story. In that case, if the wolf suit is dressed in drag queen threads, then yes, the furry is in drag. It’s really not that complicated.
