If swear words can be called “salty language” because of the flavor that they add to everyday speech, “Fuck” is habanero seasoning. But where did this word come from?

Most English swear words come from old English and haven’t changed much since the language started in the 12th century. Fuck is different- it’s actually of Norse origin. Linguists believe that the English fuck derives from the Swedish fokka, meaning to strike or push. Fokka may have been used metaphorically to mean “to copulate,” a much more fun verb which frequently involves both striking and pushing.

Following a paper trail that goes back some 700 years, we’ve been able to put together a comprehensive history of the f-word.

1310-11: English court records name a man called Roger Fuckebythenavale, presumed to be a nickname regarding his sexual inexperience.
1528: a monk scrawls “Fuckin Abbot” in the margin notes of his copy of De Officiis.
1790: American poet St. George Tucker writes “I’d not give a fuck for all you’ve read,” the earliest known instance of not giving a fuck.
1963: Vapor (1963) is the first film to use the word (“Get the fuck out!”)
1970: M*A*S*H is the first American feature film to feature the f-bomb
1972: George Carlin is arrested for “Disturbing the Peace” following his routine “Seven Dirty Words.”
2003: Lenny Bruce’s obscenity charge is posthumously pardoned
1964: Lenny Bruce is arrested for using the word in his act
1965: U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson tells the ambassador to Greece: “Fuck your parliament and your constitution.”
1971: Canadian PM Peirre Trudeau tells a conservative MP to fuck off. Confronted by reporters, Trudeau claims he said “Fuddle Duddle.”
2012: Fuck is officially listed in the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary
1971: The U.S. Supreme Court rules that public display of the f-word cannot be made a criminal offense
