I couldn’t find any new music to review, so let’s take a journey back to 2016. I’m young enough to believe that 2016 was inhabited by trilobites and gigantic ferns, and somewhere in the fossil record you’ll find What? by Figure 8. It’s a sophisticated island punk album that I could not get enough of.
What? grooves so well that I was getting sucked into every song, one after the other. It’s not mellow listening, either. It’s jam packed with rock n’ roll attitude, dripping with enough sass to scare off the meanest of black girls. It’s not angry, it’s not sad. It’s passionately annoyed, just as punk should be.
I really got a kick out of Tahiti. Not only because it’s a fun song, but because I personally had that fantasy yesterday. I really got into The Eulogy, too. I’ve always said that punk rock isn’t a you-must-be-this-punk-to-enter social club, it’s an attitude. If you have a bad attitude and like to express yourself, you’re in as far as I’m concerned. A lot of people keep trying to make it a thing. “What are your politics? Oh, you like Karl Marx? Name three of his songs. You can’t. Get out of here, poser.” Fuck those people. It was very refreshing to hear that opinion summed up in a song that someone else wrote.
In fact, it seemed that this whole album was speaking right to me. I don’t think it’s just me though, I think that’s the pure talent of this band being put to work. Every riff compliments every opinion and every bass line, while the drums really drive each point home. It’s an album that makes me want to go smoke a cigarette and shrug my shoulders at the world. It makes me want to call in tomorrow, and tell the boss to suck my balls while I’m at it. It’s so good that I’m going to end this review here and go listen to it again. Thank you, and goodnight.
